How to Set Up Energy Alerts for Your Factory or Commercial Building

In a high-stakes industrial or commercial environment, a delayed response to an energy spike can lead to thousands in excess utility charges or, worse, equipment failure. Setting up a robust energy alert system is the difference between being a reactive observer and a proactive manager.

1. Identify Your Critical Parameters

Before configuring your alerts, you must decide what constitutes a "red flag" for your specific operations. A well-rounded alert strategy should cover:

  • Demand Thresholds (kVA): Prevent expensive peak demand penalties by setting alerts at 80% or 90% of your sanctioned load.
  • Power Factor (PF): Set alerts for when your PF drops below a specific level (e.g., 0.90) to avoid ESCOM penalties.
  • Physical Parameters: For technical environments, monitor temperature, pressure, or steam flow. A spike here often indicates a mechanical issue before the machine actually breaks down.
  • Non-Operational Usage: Set alerts for high consumption during weekends or night shifts when the facility should be at a baseline "idle" state.

2. Choosing Your Alert Logic

Depending on the Switchology model you have deployed, your alert capabilities range from basic notifications to complex automation:

  • Standard Alerts (Economic & Beginner Models): These models provide email alerts based on basic parameters. They are perfect for small facilities that need to know when general usage exceeds a monthly target.
  • Custom Logic (Advantage Model): This model allows for more technical triggers. You can set alerts for any specific meter, parameter, or custom logic—such as when a specific production line is drawing more energy than its historical average.
  • Automated Action (Promax PLC Model): This is the ultimate tier of alerting. Instead of just sending an email, the system can trigger PLC-grade automation. It can auto-schedule relays or issue programmable commands to shed non-essential loads the moment a threshold is crossed.

3. Configuring the "Action" Step

An alert is only useful if it leads to a solution. When setting up your Energy Manager system, follow these three steps for every alert:

  1. The Trigger: Define the exact number or event (e.g., "If Transformer 1 exceeds 400kVA").
  2. The Notification: Decide who needs to know. You can route different alerts to different people—maintenance teams for physical parameters and finance teams for demand spikes.
  3. The Response: For users of the Promax PLC, you can pre-program the system to respond. For example, if the demand is too high, the system can automatically cycle off non-essential HVAC units for 15 minutes to stay under your limit.

4. Leveraging Real-Time Precision

The effectiveness of your alerts depends on sampling intervals.

  • If your system samples every 15 minutes (Economic Model), you might miss a short-lived but expensive power spike.
  • By using the Advantage (30-second sampling) or Promax (15-second sampling) models, your alerts become truly "real-time," allowing you to act within seconds of a deviation.
